Eight drown in Hogenakkal falls

A 23-year-old man from Bengaluru drowned in Hogenakkal falls on Sunday evening.
Police identified him as Shivaprasad, a resident of Rajajinagar working for a shopping website. Shivaprasad and three of his friends ventured into the water to swim.

When Shivaprasad began drowning, his friends raised an alarm. Local residents tried to rescue him but in vain. Police are trying to retrieve the body. The members of Shivaprasad’s family have been informed about the incident. The Pennagaram police have registered a case.

Manju, 25, from Nandipur village in Piriyapatna taluk of Mysuru district, also met a watery grave, while he had gone for swimming in the falls. A case has been registered at the Mahadeshwara Betta police station.

A family of six, including two children, drowned after the coracle they were rowing capsized in the falls.

The family hails from Salem in Tamil Nadu and the deceased have been identified as Krishnamurthy (60), Gouri (55), Ranjitha (35), Kokila (30), Darshan (3) and 10-month-old Shivu. The bodies of Gouri and Shivu have been fished out. Search for the bodies of other victims is on.
