A 25-year-old woman, who made a complaint of kidnap and rape against Raghaveshwara Bharathi, the head of Ramachandrapura Mutt, was subjected to medical examination at the Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here on Sunday.

But not all the necessary examinations could be conducted as it was a Sunday, the Girinagar police said.

She may be summoned again on Monday for the pending medical examinations.
“The woman’s statement has been recorded and we will summon Raghaveshwara Bharathi for questioning,” a police officer said. The pontiff was earlier named in another rape case, which is being probed by the Central Investigation Department (CID).

The officer said that the police top brass would decide whether the new case should be entrusted to the CID. “As things stand now, we will go ahead with our investigation.”

The woman, who works as a freelance artiste, stated in her complaint on Saturday that the seer had raped her twice — first in 2006 when she was a class 10 student at a school in Hosanagara, Shivamogga district, the headquarters of the mutt, and then in 2012 when she had come to the mutt’s branch in Girinagar here, where the seer was observing ‘Chaturmasya’.
