Former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has squarely blamed Congress president Sonia Gandhi for the inordinate delay in implementation of Mahadayi-Malaprabha river-linking project.

He said this addressing a gathering at the inauguration of Raitha Chaitanya Yatre here on Monday.

“During a campaign in Goa ahead of 2009 Assembly elections, Sonia Gandhi with an eye on vote bank, had said that her party would not allow implementation of Mahadayi. By saying so, Sonia Gandhi had cheated the people of the State,” Yeddyurappa alleged.

“An all-party delegation from the State had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Mahadayi issue recently. We (BJP) had told the Congress leaders in the delegation that the State BJP leaders would impress upon the chief ministers of Goa and Maharashtra the need to implement the project and you should convince the Opposition leaders in both states. After the meeting with prime minister got over, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge told the reporters that the prime minister had not taken any concrete decision. The Congress started adding fuel to the fire, the MP from Shivamogga and the BJP national vice-president said.
