Mob torches police bike over fatal accidental in City

A man was killed in a road accident in east Delhi’s Preet Vihar when a speeding Mercedes car hit him on Sunday night.

The incident led to violent protests in which a police motorcycle was set on fire.
The police said the driver of the car has been arrested and whether he was drunk at the time of accident is being verified.

Monu, a 24-year-old plumber, was returning from Laxmi Nagar after work when his scooter was hit by a speeding white Mercedes driven by Raj Kumar Chawla, a resident of Nirman Vihar and director of a private limited company, said the police.

The accident is said to have flung Monu in air, and he landed on a metal signboard which ripped his head off his body.

The police said people started gathering around the body after the incident, and when it was picked up for post-mortem, some people pointed to the presence of a liquor bottle — which they didn’t spot when they first saw the body — at where the body was lying. The bottle's presence infuriated the crowd, and they torched a police motorcycle and pelted stones on the road, said the police.

One man has been arrested for rioting and damaging public property, said a senior police officer.

Monu’s father Chander Bhan said the police were trying to implicate his son.

“People who first saw the body told me they didn’t see any bottle near the body. But, when the body was picked up for post-mortem, we saw a liquor bottle lying there. This is an attempt by the police to prove that my son was drunk while he was driving. This is a conspiracy to save the accused,” he said.

A pall of gloom has descended at Monu’s residence. His wife Babita, pregnant with their second child, is trying to come to terms with his death.

“My husband was a very nice person. He never raised his voice at me. He was especially fond of children, and we were expecting our second child. What will happen to us now?” she said.
