Flood of woes in N K'taka dists

Moderate to heavy rains lashed North Karnataka districts and Shivamogga since Wednesday evening. The incessant rains brought with them a flood of woes for people in Vijayapura, Raichur, Bagalkot and Koppal districts.

Vijayapura

Thursday night’s rain kept the people of Vijayapura awake trying to keep water out of their homes. Several low-lying areas  in the district were inundated.

River Doni is in spate and the Hadaginala Road is waterlogged, hitting traffic. A stream flooded the Government Primary School at Millat Nagar in Talikot town. The compound wall of the school collapsed owing to incessant rains.

The overnight rains have also washed away crops in Nagathan and surrounding areas. “Lemon trees are showing their roots due to soil erosion. Tur crops on several hundred acres have suffered damage,” Mallu Basavanthappa Katnalli, a farmer of Nagathan, told Deccan Herald.

Raichur

Raichur town and parts of the district received good rainfall on Thursday. A man suffered injuries after the roof of a house in Halepete Colony of Mudagal. In Kyravadi village the wall of a house crumbled but no injuries were reported.

The Muski reservoir is full to the brim. The crestgates of the reservoir have been opened. A bike was washed away in the rivulet’s torrent in Venkatapura. A boy, who was caught in the current, was saved by the locals. The water level in the Kavitala lake has increased.

Bagalkot

The traffic on Kudalasangama-Myageri-Almatti Road has come to a standstill as the Valakaladinni stream is overflowing. The road has been blocked for traffic since Thursday night.

Residents of over 20 villages in the region have been isolated by floodwater. As a result, schoolchildren, college students and people travelling to Kudalasangama, Hungund and Bagalkot for work are all inconvenienced.

The stretch from Kudalasangama to Vasakaladinni is in a pathetic condition. Three streams cut across the road. The road repair work and construction of bridges over the streams was sanction three months ago. However, the work never started, complain villagers.

Hubballi-Dharwad

The rain continued to lash the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad on Thursday. The KPL matches at the water-logged KSCA stadium at Rajnagar on Thursday were abandoned.
Normal life was thrown out of gear for a while in the afternoon. Drains overflowed inundating roads in low-lying areas. Several houses were flooded in Lakshmisinganakeri in Dharwad and Old Hubli area in Hubballi.
