Honour killing victim cremated

Last Updated 14 September 2015, 18:43 IST

A 16-year-old girl, who was poisoned to death by her parents in Ramanagar in a suspected honour killing after she eloped with a Dalit youth, was cremated on Monday.

Many people attended the cremation that took place at KG Hosahalli village in Ramanagar district. But the girl’s parents — Govindaraju and Jayalakshmamma — couldn’t attend as they are in jail.

The girl had eloped with Manjunath, a painter from Hubballi, recently. Her parents felt humiliated as Manjunath is a Dalit. They made a complaint to the police who tracked down the girl and Manjunath and brought them back to Ramanagar.

They counselled the girl and sent her to her parents’ home. But the parents decided to kill her as they thought she had brought “disrepute”. They gave her food laced with poison on Saturday and she died later.

Police arrested Manjunath for kidnap and under Pocso Act.
