Soaring prices fail to dampen festive spirit

Last Updated 15 September 2015, 19:38 IST

The rise in prices of essential commodities and load-shedding do not appear to have dampened the festive spirit in the City.

Huge crowds thronged markets for purchase of flowers and Gowri-Ganesha idols ahead of the festival. Gowri festival is observed on Wednesday while Ganesha Chaturthi is on September 17.

With the rise in demand, the price of flowers had hit the roof. G M Diwakar, President, Flower Market Merchants’ Association, said that price of roses and kanakambara had increased the most.

“Before the festivities, a kilogram of rose was sold at Rs 40 to Rs 50. However, on Tuesday the price increased to Rs 150 per kg. On Wednesday and Thursday, the roses are expected to cost Rs 200, per kg. Jasmine is being sold at Rs 500 per kg which was Rs 200 - Rs 300 per kg earlier,” he added.

Similarly, the prices of Kanakambara is expected to increase from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 – Rs 2,000 per kg in the next two days. There was a marginal increase the price of vegetables and fruits.

The women police personnel at Halasuru Gate police Station were in for a good surprise when Kannada actor Tara reached there offering them the traditional ‘Bagina’.
