Festival break for power cut today

The State government has decided not to cut power supply across the State, including Bengaluru, on Thursday in view of Ganesha Chaturti, Energy Minister D K Shivakumar said on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters, he said the nature has been kind to the State in the last 24 hours. “Wind speed has increased substantially. As a result generation of wind power has increased. Besides, both units of Udupi Power Corporation Limited and Ballari Thermal Power Stations have been restored recently, he added.

Currently, the State has 7,761 MW of power available against the demand of 8,500 MW. “But the supply will decline if wind speed comes down. The nature has to cooperate. We have to pray to the god for it. I request Eshwarappa (BJP leader) to pray more,” he said in a lighter vein. Eshwarappa had recently hit out at Shivakumar for the State plunging into darkness.

Rubbishing the charges that the Energy department had tried to create artificial scarcity of power, the minister said that everything was transparent in his department. He declined to comment on Industries Minister R V Deshpande's statement that power crisis was one of the reasons for postponing the global investors' meet.
