Bulls maul Tigers to emerge champs

Cricket KPL : Hubli batsmen flounder as Bijapur side powers to facile 7-wicket win in final
Last Updated 20 September 2015, 21:27 IST

A meticulous bowling performance from Bijapur Bulls helped them script a convincing seven-wicket victory over Hubli Tigers in the final to emerge champions of the Karbonn Smart KPL IV here on Sunday.

Asked to bat, the Tigers’ batting came a cropper as the Kunal Kapoor-led side could master a lowly 114/9 in 20 overs. Bulls’ young medium pacer Vyshak Vijaykumar set the tone, bagging three for 16 in his allotted four overs. Adding more misery to the Tiger was spinner KC Cariappa (3/20), who once again stood out for the Bulls with his wicket taking abilities.

In response, the Vijayapura-unit cruised to the target in 17.1 overs to clinch the crown. Seasoned campaigners Robin Uthappa (38 n.o.) and captain B Akhil (36 n.o.) shared a 55-run partnership to see their side home.

Cheap dismissal

Earlier, In-form opener Mohammed Taha fell cheaply for one to Vyshak and the poor form of Kunal (5) did more damage to the Tigers, putting them in an uncomfortable situation of 15/2 in the fourth over.

The Hubballi-side did not recover from those two early blows and Cariappa, who received the Purple Cap, got into the act to further dampen the hopes of any revival from the Tigers.

The only noteable contribution for the Tigers was from opener KB Pawan, who fought a grim battle to make a patient 32.

The Bulls’ reply began sedately, with R Samarth (27) and Raju Bhatkal (6) playing cautiously.

Though the Tigers couple of wickets, the alliance between Uthappa and Akhil was a tough one to break and they had to finish on the losing end.

The champions were awarded Rs 10 lakh while Uthappa was adjudged man of the series for his consistent show. Vyshak expectedly bagged the man of the match award.

Speaking about his team’s triumph, Uthappa said: “It was very gratifying to be a part of this phenomenal team. We had experienced hands who have been a part of the Karnataka team and youngsters, who were all motivated, also played well in our successful run.
