In the backdrop of rising tension along the border, the commanders from India and Pakistan armies on Monday held a flag meeting at Poonch in Jammu & Kashmir to discuss issue of ceasefire violations along the LoC and the International Border (IB).

The officials met at Chakan-da-Bagh crossing point in Poonch at 11:30 am. Reports said Brig H S Sareen, commander of the 121 Brigade, led the Indian side while the brigade commander of Poonch-Rawalakote headed the Pakistani team.

“A brigade commander-level flag meeting was held today (Monday) in a cordial atmosphere and issues regarding ongoing ceasefire violations, targeting of civilians and sniping action on LoC were discussed,” said defence spokesperson Col S D Goswami.

“Both sides mutually agreed to exercise restrain and take steps to defuse the situation. The flag meeting was chaired by senior brigadier of the Indian Army and lasted for about an hour,” he added.

The flag meeting was held after nearly three weeks of heavy firing and shelling of 120 mm, 82 and 61 mm mortar bombs and automatic weapons by Pakistani troops in Poonch along the LoC.

Three civilians died along the IB near Jammu this month, while six died in Poonch between August 15 and 16. Last week, BSF officer ASI Sohan was killed in shelling when Pakistan Rangers targeted his post in Rajouri district.
