No facility to monitor reckless driving

In the absence of proper facilities to monitor and measure reckless driving, commuters face double whammy from potholes and traffic police.

Traffic police penalise people for overspeeding, but have only 13 speed monitoring vehicles for the whole of Bengaluru. These vehicles are mostly located on Outer Ring Road. The onus is on the traffic police official to measure the vehicle speed. Commuters say that reckless driving, which according to police is a speed above 50 kmph, is not possible because of potholes, traffic signals and congestion on the roads.

The novel project started by BBMP  in 2006 - spot a pothole and get Rs 100 as reward - has no takers. BBMP officials say that the initiative received poor response.

Dr Ajith Benedict Rayan, Medical Director, Hosmat Hospital, said that the constant bumpy rides can lead to back pain, knee pain and related health issues. “Commuters also suffer fractures on hands and legs. The number of orthopaedic cases increase during rains. We recorded 40 fatal injuries last year and 10 cases since January this year, due to bad roads,” he added.
