Fresh clashes in Majnu ka Tila

Fresh clashes erupted in Majnu ka Tila in north Delhi on Thursday afternoon, a day after stone pelting between two communities living across a road, leading to minor injuries and damage to several vehicles.

On Thursday, the two sides hurled stones at each other. Three cars were damaged while 12 people were detained, as the police brought the situation under control in about an hour.

“We have detained 12 people for rioting and an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the reasons and the culprits behind the clashes,’’ said, Madhur Verma, DCP (North). Police personnel have been deployed in the area. A CCTV footage is being scanned to find out the culprits, said a police officer.

Even while normalcy was returning on Thursday after Wednesday night’s clash, a few heated exchanges between teenagers led to fresh stone pelting.

It started with rumours of a build-up of youths on the other side of the road, which sent teenagers in the Valmiki community into a huddle and they started storing stones and bricks. When a teenager from their community came out on the road, he was pelted with stones. This provoked stone pelting from his own side.
