201 volunteers donate blood to celebrate private firm head's birthday in Mangal

A total of 201 volunteers from Samruddha Jeevan Foundation (SJF) donated blood to celebrate their president’s birthday, at Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Blood Bank located at Govt Ladygoschen hospital premises on Friday.

The mega blood donation camp organised by the foundation in association with IRCS and Media Alumni Association of Mangalagangothri (MAAM), witnessed volunteers from Belthangady, Sullia, Puttur, Bantwal besides from Mangaluru taluks.

SJF Executive Manager J Venkatesh said that though they had planned to organise the mega camp on September 26 (on SJF President Dr Mahesh Motewar’s birthday), they had to advance  it to September 25 in view of the proposed State bandh on September 26.

All over India, the SJF plans to organise mega blood donation camps at 400 locations in 17 states  on September 26. In the State, the blood donation camp was held in 52 locations including Mangaluru and Udupi on Friday.

Earlier, addressing the gathering after inaugurating the camp,  Member of Legislative Assembly, J R Lobo said lauded the initiative taken up by SJF and their volunteers and thanked them for donating blood. “Very few people can think of such initiatives to celebrate their birthday,” he said referring to SJF president Mahesh Motewar’s vision.

IRCS Dakshina Kannada unit Chairman Prabhakar Shriyan explained the benefits of blood donation while MAAM president Florine Roche briefed about the contribution of MAAM to society.

2,000 units of blood
IRCS Blood Bank Chairman R A Fernandes said that the Red Cross organised more than 50 blood donation camps last year and collected more than 2,000 units of blood, out of which 1,002 units were given free of cost to patients at Govt Ladygoschen hospital.

As part of the celebrations, SJF volunteers managed to get eight children whose birthday is on September 26 and they cut a big cake on the occasion.

The IRCS had tied up with Tejaswini Hospital for smooth functioning of the camp. While IRCS collected 141 units of blood, the Tejaswini hospital collected 60 units of blood during the day.

The SJF expects collection of more than 3 lakh units of blood from 17 states and more than 350 locations throughout India on September 26.
