Rights groups and political parties continue to react to the lynching of a Muslim man in Uttar Pradesh after the rumour that his family was eating beef.

While social media is flooded with messages on the incident, there were condemnations for Union Minister of State for Culture Mahesh Sharma’s attempts to “soft-pedal” the issue.

In a strongly worded statement, Communist Party of India lamented over the “height of intolerance” that allowed a man to be killed on the basis of rumours. It also said nowhere in the world a man is killed for eating meat.
