The road leading to Madiwala market will finally get a facelift with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) earmarking Rs 4.7 crore for the road works.

BBMP Superintendent Engineer (Major Roads), K T Nagaraj said that the one km-stretch would be asphalted and the work is expected to be completed in a span of six to eight months. The project began on Thursday with the traditional ground-breaking ceremony in the presence of Bengaluru urban district-in-charge Minister Ramalinga Reddy.

The Palike officials said that the road was in a bad shape and with the recent downpour the condition had worsened even more. According to traders, the Madiwala market road was asphalted a year ago, but then, due to underground drainage works, the road was back in a battered state with a number of potholes.

“Apart from bad road, the traders faced lack of drinking water, absence of toilets, among others,” said Vinay V, a wholesale trader.

Special Duty Officer of BBMP standing committee for markets, T Srinivasamurthy, said legal action would be taken against traders at BBMP markets who did not pay rents to the civic agency. shops will be shutdown if traders did not pay heed to the notices served, he added.

Chairperson for Markets Committee, Gayathri M, who held a meeting on Thursday, instructed the committee members to get the details related to traders, their license, among others, from the markets located in the new Palike zones.
“Presently, information is available only from the old zones and hence a survey has be conducted,” she said.
