The Centre is urging phone makers to introduce a panic button in cellphones for women’s safety, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said here on Friday.

The government is talking with phone-makers on including a panic button in cellphones with GPS connectivity, she said while answering queries at a “Student Parliament”.

“We were flooded with ideas, including wearing specialised necklaces, bracelets and rings which had certain SOS message-sending features,” she said at the inauguration of the event on women’s safety organised by the ABVP. “The government is in conversation with phone manufacturers and the proposal is likely to be executed in a few months.”

Maneka also said the Union government will recruit one special woman police officer in each village, who will work as an interface between police and the women of the particular area.
Talking about the schemes of the NDA government, she said the focus was on initiatives like “beti bachao, beti padhao” and reservation of posts for women in police stations.

She also batted for 33 per cent reservation for women in police forces. “The recruitment of 1,400 women in Delhi police is a welcome step which other states should follow,” she said.
The three-day “parliament”, which kicked-off on Thursday, saw participation of over 300 students from universities across the country.

According to the ABVP, the event on Friday touched upon issues such as education, security, health, dignity and self-reliance of women. “This parliament passed a resolution which will be handed over to different ministries of the central government and its main theme will be to take immediate actions on issues concerning women,” the RSS-affiliated outfit said.
