DK ZP: Venkat Dambekodi new in-charge president

Overall development of the district will be the priority

The outgoing Zilla Panchayat president K P Sucharitha Shetty handed over the charge to Dambekodi as Shetty’s  term ended on Thursday. Speaking to mediapersons after assuming the charge, Dambekodi said that his priority will be for the overall development of the district.

He said that he will put an effort to sort out all problems of the district taking members from all political parties into confidence.

The election for the third term of Zilla Panchayat president has been put off by the High Court as a writ petition is pending against it. Dambekodi will continue to be the in-charge president of the the Zilla Panchayat till further order from the High Court.

97 per cent progress

Outgoing president K P Sucharitha Shetty said that the Zilla Panchayat has achieved 97 per cent progress by undertaking development works worth Rs 272.36 crore out of the sanctioned amount Rs 280.10 crore during 2007-08.

Speaking to mediapersons, Shetty said that 93 per cent progress has been achieved during 2008-09 by undertaking development works of Rs 310.08 crore against the sanctioned amount of Rs 335.98 crore.

He said that Rs 24.44 crore was sanctioned by the government under the Rural Drinking Water Scheme wherein Rs 13.72 crore was released and Rs 12.12 crore was spent to undertake 301 projects in 2007-08. In 2008-09 Rs 12.14 crore was spent to undertake drinking water projects, while the government had released Rs 15.03 crore, he added.

‘Sampoorna Swachatha’

The Zilla Panchayat has constructed 95,010 toilets for houses, 1,236 toilets for schools, 505 for anganwadis and 34 public toilets under the ‘Sampoorna Swachatha Andolan’ scheme. A total of Rs 12.56 crore was released while the government had sanctioned Rs 16.47 crore for the purpose, he informed. Belthangadi taluk and 182 gram panchayats in the district had bagged the ‘Nirmal Grama Puraskar’ awards under the ‘Sampoorna Swachatha Andolan,’ he added.

Gram Sadak Scheme

A total of 73 works were completed utilising Rs 10.51 crore released under the Chief Minister’s Gram Sadak Scheme in 2007-08, Shetty said adding that 118 works were undertaken spending Rs 16.72 crore released under the scheme in 2008-09. A total of 14 roads were developed spending Rs 42.94 crore under the Prime Minister’s Gram Sadak Scheme in 2007-08. Rs 63.13 crore has been sanctioned under the scheme for the year 2008-09 and 17 works are under progress, Shetty said.

About 110 Self-Help Groups and 48 individuals were provided with loans and financial assistance to the tune of Rs 1.92 crore under the Swarnajayanthi Gram Swarojgari Scheme in 2007-08.

Meanwhile, 168 Self-Help Groups and 19 individuals were benefited with loans and financial assistance to the tune of Rs 2.56 crore under the scheme in 2008-09, he said.

‘Western Ghat  Development’

Rs 1.29 crore has been released out of Rs 1.8 crore sanctioned under the Western Ghat Development Scheme for the district in 2007-08. Development works were carried out in 2,557 hectares under the scheme. Meanwhile, Rs 2.25 was released under the scheme in 2008-09, wherein development works were undertaken in 2,941 hectares of land, Shetty informed.

Housing

A total of 130 houses were constructed under the Ambedkar Vasathi Scheme utilising Rs 51.93 lakh and 606 houses were constructed spending Rs 1.52 crore under the Indira Awaz Yojna in the 2007-08. Meanwhile 535 houses were constructed at a cost of Rs 3 crore under the scheme in 2008-09, he said.
