Hardik Patel threatens to expose Gujarat Model 'myth'
Quota stir leader Hardik Patel on Saturday threatened to “expose the reality behind” much-talked about “Gujarat Model” of development.

“The government claims that farmers are happy in Gujarat. Then why are farmers committing suicide? Why are people involved in recruitment scams moving around freely? Why are women being beaten and put behind bars by police? Is this Gujarat Model of Development?” Hardik said while speaking to mediapersons. “We have decided to expose the well-propagated myth.”

Hardik, who is leading protests to seek OBC status and reservations for Patel community in government jobs and educational institutions, also issued an ultimatum of one week for the state government to make its stand on reservation clear or “face severe consequences”.

Hardik also put forth a charter of demands that include abolition of the roster and carry-forward system in reservation for OBCs, SC and ST candidates in various government jobs, uniform age bar for recruitment of candidates from all categories, setting up of a separate commission for Patels and an enquiry commission by a sitting high court judge to look into the charges of atrocities committed by the police during the agitation.

Talking about PAAS plan to hold demonstration, Hardik said protests will wear uniformed T-shirts and caps during the upcoming India-South Africa cricket match in Rajkot on October 18. “If we are prevented from entering the stadium, we will hold a match outside the stadium on the main road.”

Earlier this week, the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) had issued a request to Patidars not to use the ODI match as a platform for their agitation. “There are reports to this effect and I would request them not to do so as this is not a platform for such activities,” Niranjan Shah, honorary secretary of SCA, said.

The SCA had, for the very first time, made it compulsory for cricket buffs seeking to buy a ticket to ODI to produce his/her photo identity proof.
