The issue of taking back compensation cheque from the family members of a deceased farmer Lokesh of Sanabadakoppalu has been settled with KPCC members returning the cheque on Thursday.

KPCC general secretary Anand presented a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to Shobha, wife of Lokesh, putting an end to the issue. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and ministers, had visited the village to pay last respects to Lokesh, who committed suicide. KPCC president G Parameshwara had presented the cheque, which was later taken back due to some errors. This attracted criticism from various quarters, with the family members sharing their problems with the media.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Anand said the compensation cheque was taken back to set right a few errors. As KPCC president is in Delhi, there was some delay in returning the cheque. Now, the problem has been sorted out and the cheque issued, he added.

It is learnt that one acre of land belonging to the family has submerged in Thonnuru lake. The issue will be taken up with the authorities concerned and steps will be taken to provide compensation for the land, he said.

The family will get a compensation of Rs 5 lakh, besides widow pension of Rs 2,000 for Shobha from the government, he added.

District Congress president M S Athmananda, leaders Satyananda, H Manjunath and others were present on the occasion.
