Healthy treats for a scorching day

Last Updated 16 October 2015, 18:41 IST

As a tropical country, India experiences hot days for a major portion of the year. If you hate gulping down plain water every now and then, here are two options that not only quench your thirst, but also provide you with loads of nutrition: coconuts and cucumbers.

Be it the fresh water or the white, juicy flesh, coconut has something to offer to all. In fact, coconut water is a natural isotonic beverage, with the same level of electrolyte balance as that of our blood. Cucumbers, on the other hand, are a staple in our raitas and salads and are packed with all essential elements.

Some of the benefits of coconut water and cucumber include:

Coconut water is more nutritious than whole milk as it has less fat and no cholesterol.
It is naturally sterile as it permeates through the filtering husk.
It contains more potassium than most sports and energy drinks.
Since it contains lauric acid, which is present in mother’s milk, coconut water is better than processed baby milk.

Coconut water rates low on fat content and hence, aids weight loss.
Used for centuries, cucumbers have been known to be relished by European traders and explorers to thwart starvation. They are rich sources of Vitamins – B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, C and also folic acid, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.

If you want to avoid a hangover or a terrible headache, eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed. They contain enough sugar, Vitamin B and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients lost by the body.
