Punjab sacrilege incidents: Police arrest two men

Last Updated 20 October 2015, 20:24 IST

Claiming foreign conspiracy in the spate of desecrations of Sikh religious symbols in the state, Punjab police on Tuesday said two local men operated in cahoots with foreign collaborators.

Claiming they solved five of the seven registered cases of sacrilege, police said they arrested brothers Rupinder and Jaswinder in a bid to expose the conspiracy.

Late Tuesday evening, police said they intercepted calls between the brothers and recorded phone conversation Rupinder had with conspirators in Dubai and Australia.
The intercepts have been done according to law, Punjab Additional Director General of Police Sahota said.

The conversation revealed the plot to desecrate the holy Guru Granth Sahib, for which the brothers appeared to have received money. The duo was involved in the sacrilege incident that took place in a village in Kotkapura, police said.
