Villagers oppose landfills, stage protest

Last Updated 21 October 2015, 21:48 IST

The residents living around two major fills on Doddaballapura Road staged a protest on Wednesday against dumping garbage in their villages.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the BBMP officials had assured the residents of Elerampura and Koratagere that the landfills in their villages would be operational only for two months and later they would be converted into scientific waste disposal units. However, dumping of garbage at the two landfills has continued even after two months, the protesters claimed.

“Earlier the farmers used to grow multiple crops but ever since the landfills came up in the area, the lands have turned barren and farmers have lost their source of income,”  said Swami Hanumanthanatha, who led the protest. K V Satyaprakash, another resident, said that the BBMP was using force to dump waste in the landfills.
