'Custodial torture is naked violation of human dignity'

A businessman is battling for his life after four armed assailants entered his house in south Delhi’s Neb Sarai and shot at him multiple times on Tuesday morning. Police suspect personal rivalry behind the attack.

Praveen, 29, who is a property businessman was sleeping at his house when around 5.30 am four men came to his residence and started firing indiscriminately.

“Four men, after asking for Praveen’s address from his neighbors, knocked at his door. His wife opened the door and they asked her to call him. In the next moment they started firing at him. They shot several rounds of which two hit him,’’ said victim’s neighbour.

After the firing, the assailants ran away leaving their country made pistol behind, police said.

Family members immediately called police, which took the victim to a hospital.
According to police, two bullets struck at Praveen’s abdomen and he was taken to Max Super Speciality hospital where his condition is reported to be critical.

Two men had come on Sunday also asking for the victim’s house. But on Tuesday, when again four men came at Deoli village near Neb Sarai, they enquired about Kale – an alias of Praveen – by which he is known in his locality, and subsequently they got his address, said neighbours.

A possible spat with some people is suspected to be the reason behind the attack.
“Praveen had verbal spats with some people in Gurgao. The attempt on his life is possibly a result of it,” said a neighbour.

According to police, they have identified some people who are possibly behind the attack. Police are also scanning CCTV footage of the area to ascertain the identity of the assailants and also talking to Praveen’s friends. Police are waiting for the victim to recover to get clarity on the incident.
