26 pc candidates in Bihar polls have criminal record

A little more than one-fourth of 766 candidates in the fourth phase of Bihar Assembly polls have serious criminal charges like murder, according to a  report by private election watchdog.

The report, which is prepared by the Association for Democratic Rights (ADR) by analysing affidavits filed by the candidates showed that around 28 per cent of them are crorepatis.

Among the candidates, 201 or 26 per cent of the candidates have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, communal disharmony, kidnapping and crimes against women.

Sixteen candidates have declared cases related to murder. Amit Kumar, an Independent candidate from the Sursand constituency, has declared four charges related to murder while Birendra Prasad Gupta of the CPI (Marxist-Leninist-Liberation) from the Sikta constituency has declared three charges related to murder in their respective affidavits.

Twenty-eight out of 42 BJP candidates have serious criminal records while 15 out of 21 JD(U) candidates and 17 out of 26 candidates of the RJD also have similar charges.
Fourty-eight out of 55 constituencies in the fourth phase of Bihar Assembly elections have three or more candidates with declared criminal cases. Riga constituency with nine candidates has the highest number of candidates who have self-declared criminal cases against themselves.

On the crorepati front, there are 220 such candidates.
