A 33-year-old man who duped people for leading a lavish life is now cooling his heels behind bars. The Central Crime Branch police on Tuesday arrested Jitendra Sankurathri for duping gullible medical seat aspirants by receiving huge money from them.

Sankurathri had taken Rs 65 lakh from Anjenya Reddy in 2013 and Rs 25 lakh from Hanumantha Rao in 2015 by promising to get medical seats for their relatives in prestigious medical colleges.

However, he started avoiding them and stopped receiving their calls after getting the money, said the police.

Reddy and Rao had lodged a complaint against Sankurathri. The CCB police traced him to an apartment on Lavelle Road, from where he was arrested. He is a native of Sindhanur in Raichur district.

A senior police officer said, “He had given money to the security guard of the apartment and had asked him not to reveal his identity to anyone. But we managed to contact the apartment owner and made the arrest.”

He told the police he wanted to live in luxury so he cheated people to make easy money.  “The accused flaunted his lavish lifestyle to convince his victims and take money from them. After a few days, he would switch off his mobile phone and go underground. He has been cheating people for the past three to four years.”, the officer said. Further investigation is on, he added.
