On Friday night, the day of Karva Chauth, an interior designer allegedly strangled his wife and son in northwest Delhi’s Keshavpuram.

Police suspect that he took this extreme step due to his poor financial condition.
The accused has been identified as Vikram Bhatia, native of Amritsar who lived with his wife Sunita and three-year-old son Navrita in the second floor of the rented accommodation in Ganeshpura area of Keshavpuram.

The incident came to light around 10 pm when the landlord of the building, where the accused lives, made a PCR call, police said.

After getting information, police team reached the spot and opened the gate of the house and found Sunita and Navrita lying on the floor. The man was in an inebriated condition.

“The accused had strangled his wife and children to death,” police said.

The suspicion first arose when some people and landlord found no activity in Vikram’s flat on the day of Karva Chauth, after which the landlord knocked on his door and called Vikram’s name on which he answered.

“When he was asked about his wife he told that he has sent his wife to meet God as he had killed his wife and children,” police said.

Police recovered a note from the spot which mentioned a debt which he had to pay to some people.

“The bodies and the accused were taken to hospital. Vikram was given medical treatment as he was semi-conscious and it was suspected that he might have tried to commit suicide. However, after medical treatment it was found out that he was semi-conscious because he had consumed large quantity of alcohol,’’ said an investigating officer.

Vikram told police that he first strangled his wife and then the child, the official said.

Vikram, with his family, had shifted in the flat one month ago. A case under IPC section 302 has been registered at Keshavpuram police station and police are probing the case.
