Two people, including an associate of fugitive don Chota Shakeel, were murdered in a gang war inside the Mangaluru sub-jail on Monday.

Two gangs clashed when the jail inmates were having breakfast, resulting in the death of the two.

The deceased were Madoor Isubu alias Madoor Yusuf, and his associate Ganesh Shetty. One group member attacked Isubu and Ganesh with sharp weapons and the duo died on the spot. Six inmates, the Jail Superintendent and a few police personnel were injured in the violence.

Isubu was arrested with the help of Interpol in 2010. He was involved in the murder of BJP leader Sukhananda Shetty and rowdy Candle Santhu. Isubu was also allegedly involved in extortion and communal clashes.

Mumbai underworld

Ganesh, who hails from Surathkal, was a “sharp shooter” in Mumbai underworld. He was involved in the murder of Mahendra Prathap in 1994 and was arrested in March 2010.

Ganesh had intervened to save Isubu from the attack by the opponent gang but was hacked to death instead. Jail Superintendent Obaleshappa and the staff were also attacked. Obaleshappa suffered injuries and he is undergoing treatment in hospital.

Out of the six jail inmates who suffered injuries Mohammed Iqbal, Mohammed Asif, and Shobharaj are being treated in the same hospital.
City Police Commissioner S Murugan who visited the jail following the incident, told mediapersons that the two gangs clashed when they were having breakfast.

“Madoor Isubu and Ganesh Shetty were stabbed using sharp weapons. It is suspected that the weapons must have been thrown into the jail from outside hours before the incident.”

He said preliminary investigation has revealed that the sharp weapons had not entered into the jail from the main gate as security had been beefed up in the last few days. The police were keeping a strict vigil on persons entering and leaving the jail. Even the jail staff were regularly inspecting. It is suspected that associated of the attackers must have thrown the sharp weapons into the jail.

“The incident was purely a case of gang rivalry. We have identified the attackers. The clash has no communal undertones.” It is suspected that the associates of Akashbhavan Sharan and Vicky Shetty are behind the attack.

Ganesh Shetty has been lodged in Mangaluru jail since 2010. He was granted bail on  September 30 but could not fulfill the bail conditions, as a result of which he was not released. In fact, he was all set to fulfill the bail conditions on Monday and walk free, said his Advocate S P Chengappa. Commissioner Murugan said DCP (crime) Dr M Sanjeev Patil is probing the incident.

Parameshwara on clash

Home Minister Parameshwara said he has directed the police to conduct a thorough probe into the clash and submit a report. The police have been asked to ascertain how the jail inmates accessed weapons to attack their rival groups and what triggered the attack, he added when reporters sought his reaction in Bengaluru.

Later, Parameshwara met senior police officers and discussed measures to be taken to address moral policing menace and effective enforcement of law and order.

DG&IGP Om Prakash, and Home secretary S N Pattanayak and others were present in the meeting.
