Heavy evening rain catches citizens unawares

Last Updated 02 November 2015, 20:41 IST

Heavy rains threw traffic out of gear in several parts of the City on Monday evening causing inconvenience to road users, particularly those returning home from work. The sudden showers also led to disruption in power supply in manyareas.

The City received 50.6 mm rain till 8.30 pm, according to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Bengaluru. IMD, Bengaluru, Director-in-charge Geeta Agnihotri  said: “Northeast monsoon has set in over Tamil Nadu on October 28 due to which Karnataka has also started receiving rains. The rainfall is expected to continue for two more days.”

The heavy downpour led to waterlogging and traffic jams in many areas.  The traffic police deployed additional personnel to regulate traffic. At a few junctions, the police manually regulated vehicular movement due to the heavy rush. Traffic signals stopped functioning at the busy Minsk Square.

Many roads and junctions were blocked for hours. Roads in and around Majestic, Mekhri Circle, Peenya, Yeswantpur, Mysuru Road, Bannerghatta Road and Hosur Road were the most affected. Some passengers, who were to travel abroad, missed their flights as they could not reach Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on time. “I was struck in jam on JC Road for over an hour and could not reach the KIA on time,” a passenger to Singapore told Deccan Herald.

Vehicles could not move for hours on Platform Road, most areas in and around Manyata Tech Park, CBI Junction, Old Madras Road, Indiranagar, Ulsoor, Inner Ring Road and Kengeri due to waterlogging. Vehicular movement was stopped abruptly for hours near Old Kino Theatre and road below railway underbridge was submerged in water.

The BBMP and BWSSB staff had pump the water. Vehicular movement resumed only around 9 pm, said the police.  The underground parking facility at KR Market was also submerged and at BVK Iyengar Road, two bikes slipped and motorists fell down. Water gushed inside the IIM Bannerghatta campus. While there were no complaints of tree uprooting, two houses were inundated near ITC Factory, Subbanna Garden and a manhole overflowed at 9th Cross, Hombegowda Nagar.

Waterlogging

Waterlogging was also reported from Shanthinagar and Shadabnagar. Rainwater gushed into Sri Dharmaraya Swamy  temple at Nagarathpet and Jalakanteshwara temple at Kaggadasapura. The idol at Jalakanteshwara temple was submerged in drainage water.

Ramadevi, a resident from Cubbonpet said: “The road has been dug for the drainage works near Jalakanteshwara temple and hence, the condition has worsened. The idol was submerged up to four feet and late in the evening the water was pumped out by BBMP."
