A labourer repeatedly smashed his teenage wife’s head with a hollow brick at their home in Whitefield on Sunday night, the police said. He suspected her of having an affair.

Vijay Kumar, a native of Tunganahalli, Chikkaballapur district, fought with his wife Yashodha, 19, before going to bed. In the dead of night, he woke up, took a hollow brick and kept hitting Yashodha’s head with it until she died.

The neighbours rushed to the house after hearing the victim’s screams but it was too late. They called the police who arrived at the spot and apprehended Kumar. In a complaint to the police, Yashodha’s parents said Kumar had murdered her and sought action against him.

The couple had got married after courtship. But chinks began to appear in their relationship as Kumar suspected her fidelity. The couple would fight frequently over the matter, the police said.

Knife at CM’s event

A 54-year-old man from T Narsipur, Mysuru district, has been arrested for carrying a knife into the chief minister’s ‘Janata Darshan’ programme on Monday.

Lingaraju arrived at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s official residence at 9 am to submit a memorandum. He handed over his bag to the police at the security gate before entering in. On his way back, he asked for his bag. While returning his bag, the security personnel grew suspicious as they noticed some object inside. Upon checking, it turned out to be a knife. They detained him and called the High Grounds police.

Lingaraju, the police said, made contradictory statements during interrogation. Once he said he was a sub-inspector.

Then he said he had carried the knife to cut fruits. He also claimed to have been to China along with Siddaramaiah. He said he was “very close” to the chief minister. The police then took him to the Bowring Hospital for medical examination.

The doctors proclaimed him to be suffering from a mental disorder. The Mysuru SP has been asked to check Lingaraju’s antecedents, a senior police officer said. The man has been booked under the Mental Health Act, 1987.
