Tension prevailed at outer Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy on Monday when a mob went on a rampage alleging police inaction over a 23-year-old architect being found dead under mysterious circumstances. Sudhir Singh, a resident of Shahbad Dairy D-Block, was found hanging from a tree in a park.

The police are treating the death as a suicide, but his family members claim murder. No suicide note was recovered, the police said.

Locals turned violent after the recovery of the body. They damaged seven Delhi Transport Corporation buses, clashed with the police, besides blocking traffic and shouting slogans against the Delhi Police.

According to the police, a neighbour of the Singh family had informed them about the body.

“A call was made to the family at 2.30 am on Monday. They went to the park and themselves removed the body from the tree,” said a police officer. A call was also made to the police control room, on which Sudhir was taken to a nearby hospital. He was declared brought dead.

Sudhir’s father Charan Singh is a local property dealer. He told the police that the family had gone to sleep after having dinner on Sunday. They were not aware of Sudhir leaving the house. “It is alleged that Sudhir was called to the park and killed by someone known to him,” the officer added.

A team from Shahbad Dairy police station is investigating the matter. In the initial probe, the police found that there were no injury marks on Sudhir’s body. His body was found hanging, but the feet were almost touching the ground. “No case has been filed so far. We are waiting for the post-mortem report for further action in the matter,” the officer said. The investigating officers have also analysed the call data record of Sudhir’s mobile phone.

On Monday morning, a protest was held in which people pelted stones at buses passing through the area. The incident led to traffic snarls in the area and traffic was hit on roads leading to Rohini and Bawana for over three hours. “Additional force was sent to the spot to control the situation and disperse the mob,” the officer added.

A case of rioting has been registered against unknown persons for creating ruckus and damaging public property.
