Seventeen-year-old Ujjwal Sharma, a resident of east Delhi’s Geeta Colony, showed presence of mind and courage on Sunday evening when he single-handedly grabbed a thief running away with looted jewellery in his neighbourhood.

He then with the help of his friends pinned him down before handing him over to police.
Popularly known as Sabii in the neighbourhood, Ujjwal is a class 12 student of LPS Public School, Laxmi Nagar.

Around 7.45 pm, Sharma was standing with his friends near a barber’s shop, when he saw a man running with a bag.

“I was spending my Sunday evening with my friends. We were standing on the street and making plan for having food outside, when I saw a man running on the street,” said Ujjwal.

No sooner did the man fell, distant screams of of “chor-chor” grabbed their attention.
“As the man reached near us, I threw my burger on the ground and pounced on him, managing to give him a shove. However, that only made him a bit off-balanced, and he kept on running,” said Ujjwal.

Then he started running after him, and after a chase of about 100 metre, the thief slowed a bit to take a left turn at the T-point, Ujjwal jumped on him from behind and both fell.

“As we fell on the ground, my other friends also arrived there and we together caught hold of him. We took out the bag from his shoulders, and asked him to walk till the shop again,” Ujjwal added.

As they were taking the thief to the shop, other people joined them and they started thrashing him.

As the crowd was beating him, his country-made pistol fell out from his trouser.
“After I saw the gun, a shiver went down my spine. I wondered what if he had used it on me. However, I brushed the thought aside and started helping people to hand him over to police,” he added.

Residents of the colony, especially the children, are all in praise of the teenager. However, for an unassuming Sabii, as a responsible resident of the colony, it was an act which he had to do under the given circumstances.
