A traffic sub-inspector on duty was injured when an Iraqi national driving a high-end car rammed into him near Manipal Centre on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred when the Shivajinagar traffic sub-inspector Krishnamurthy and head constable Rajashekhar were regulating traffic at the busy Cubbon Road junction, braving rains. Around 7.30 pm, Murthy tried to stop a car which tried to take right turn at the junction in violation of the rule.

But the driver, later identified as Mustafa, 24, an Iraqi national, did not stop the car and rammed into the SI and fled the spot. The other cops noticed the car heading towards Dickenson Road and alerted the traffic cops there. They stopped the vehicular movement on Dickenson road and nabbed Mustafa and informed the jurisdictional Commercial Street police, who arrested him.

Head constable Rajashekar lodged a complaint and Mustafa was booked under the section IPC Section 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty).

Meanwhile, an injured Murthy was rushed to Bowring Hospital and is said to be out of danger. “For now, Mustafa has been arrested and we are yet to question him and collect his details. Also, we will subject him to medical examination to ascertain if he was drunk,” a senior police officer told Deccan Herald.

In another incident, a 32-year-old private company employee abused and threatened the traffic cops on duty at Sony World junction in Koramangala where traffic had come to a halt following heavy rains on Monday night.

Around 8.30 pm, the traffic police from Adugodi station were regulating traffic at Sony World junction which gets flooded whenever it rains. They noticed a car coming from Jaipuria junction in a rash and negligent manner.

The car jumped the signal and the cops tried to flag it down. But, the driver sped away and stopped a few metres ahead.

The driver, Imran, 36, of Ejipura, rushed towards the cops and started abusing them. He told them that “it is because of people like him paying taxes promptly that the cops are getting their salaries and are able to earn their bread and butter and look after their families. He also used profanities and  threatened them of dire consequences,” a policeman who was at the spot said.

Imran dropped names of some top police officers and told the cops that he is well-connected and can do whatever he wanted.

He called up a woman, who came to the spot and hurled abuses at the police. As the situation was going out of control, the cops alerted the Koramangala police, who rushed to the spot and took away Imran and seized his car. Imran has been booked under IPC Sections 353 and 504, the police said.
