Delhi Medical Council suspends four doctors

Action taken after pregnant woman died
Last Updated 04 November 2015, 06:34 IST

The Delhi Medical Council has suspended two doctors for one year and two other doctors for three months in a 2012 case in which a pregnant woman died due to alleged medical negligence at two hospitals.

“The DMC cancelled the licence of four doctors for a given period of time after the Medical Council of India recommended the punishment. The order was put up on Friday. The doctors whose name have been struck off the list can appeal to the High Court,” said Dr Girish Tyagi, Registrar, Delhi Medical Council (DMC).

The DMC has now cancelled the licences of Dr Vijay Kohli, medical superindent of Satyam Hospital, and Dr Gaurav Bansal of Navjeevan Hospital, Pitampura for one year.

Dr Alka Goel, a visiting consultant at Satyam Hospital at that time and Dr Renu Agarwal from Navjeevan Hospital have been barred from practising medicine for three months.
It is necessary for every doctor to be registered with the DMC to practice medicine in the city.

In June, 2014, the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) had cancelled the registration of Satyam Hospital, Rohini.

Kamini Solanki, the deceased, was first treated by an unqualified doctor at this hospital.
The MCI has found Dr Kohli guilty of appointing an illegal doctor at his hospital.

A person who does not hold an MBBS degree cannot practice modern medicine in the city.
While Dr Bansal is guilty of medical negligence as there is a possibility of instrumentation at the hospital, according to a DMC order.

The DMC had earlier found the patient suffered perforation of uterus and that the police should be asked to probe who subjected the woman to instrumentation.

The medical bodies have found that both Dr Goel and Dr Agarwal are guilty of not performing their responsibilities adequately as doctors.

Dr Agarwal had not updated the patient’s husband that the woman had suffered perforation of uterus even though she knew about it.

The woman was later shifted to Jaipur Golden Hospital where she died. The Public Grievances Commission had earlier directed the DHS to take action against Jaipur Golden Hospital as it had not conducted post mortem on the woman despite her cause of death being unnatural.
