Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Novo Nordisk Education Foundation launched a campaign to mark Diabetes Day in the City on Wednesday.

A free screening camp and diabetes awareness programme was conducted for all Pourakarmikas from the East Zone as part of the campaign.

Managing trustee of the foundation Melvin D’Souza said that there is a need to create a conducive environment and provide infrastructure for proper diagnosis and management of diabetes in India.

“Diabetes complicates everyday living and also puts the affected person at strong risk of complications. As we continue to find ways to contain the ramifications of this health disorder, it is critical that we reach out to different segments of the society and address their concerns at the grassroots level,” he said.

“Diabetes has emerged as one of the most serious health problems of our times. It is known as the silent killer. Due to lack of awareness, a large percentage of people don’t even know that they have diabetes. Creating awareness and detecting it early through screening camps are important to fight against diabetes,” Dr KM Prasanna Kumar, senior endocrinologist-diabetologist and CEO of Bangalore Diabetes Hospital said.
