Two-day exhibition marks 125th birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru

An exhibition of rare photographs of the first prime minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations, at Government Employees Association building, in Mangaluru on Thursday.

The two-day exhibition is being organised as part of 125th birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The exhibition of 96 photographs provides a glimpse of pre and post-Independent India.

Nehru in his early days with his father Motilal Nehru, Anand Bhavan, the ancestral house of Nehru at Allahabad, Nehru with his grand children Rajeev Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi along with his daughter Indira Gandhi, a group photo with various leaders at the Congress convention in 1919, are some of the photographs displayed at the exhibition.

Mahatma Gandhi with Nehru and Sardar Vallabhai Patel, interaction with Acharya Vinobha Bhave, participation in the celebrations to mark 100 years of railways in India, interaction with nuclear scientists, taking charge on August 15, 1947 and his participation at various events to mark development projects after independence, Nehru’s visit to Bengaluru to lay foundation stone for Vidhana Soudha on July 13, 1951, Nehru interacting with Sir M  Visvesvaraya during the golden jubilee celebrations of IISc, Bengaluru in 1959, visit to Mysuru to take part in world food conference with Lalitha Mahal Palace in the backdrop and his visit to Shravanabelagola and KGF also finds a place in the exhibition. The photographs of Nehru’s visit to Pakistan in 1960, meeting Chinese leader Mao- Tse-Tung in 1954, Cuban President Fidel Castro are a few other rare images kept on display.

Another photograph is that of Jawaharlal Nehru addressing the nation on January 30, 1948, after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and delivering his classic speech “the light has gone out of our lives...”

Speaking after inaugurating the exhibition, MLA J R Lobo said, Jawaharlal Nehru had laid foundation for the modern India through his five year plan.
