Smartboard to tell quacks from doctors in Tamil Nadu

Last Updated 05 November 2015, 20:27 IST

The Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TMC) has launched “smart board” for medical practitioners across the state in a bid to curb fake doctors.

The board, which is likely to be mandatory for all doctors, will have the physician’s name, photograph, his/her registration number with the TMC, their qualifications and their specialisation along with the council’s specific emblem. The board will also contain an SMS number, 56767, belonging to TMC.

TMC president Dr P Balakrishnan said that people who have mobile phones could send an SMS to the number written in the board. “Immediately, the mobile user will get all the details of the doctor, including their specialisation,” he added.

Balakrishnan said if a person has a smartphone, he or she could get the information about the doctor by scanning TMC’s hologram in the board through their mobile device.

“A total of 1.13 lakh doctors from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have registered with us,” he said, adding almost all the doctors from these two places were TMC’s members, who will cooperate for the new proposal.

Balakrishnan said many innocent people die due to wrong prescription, given by fake doctors. There are about 30,000 quacks in the state. “With the public cooperation, the new initiative will surely help to crack down on quacks,” he said.
