Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday publicly offered sermons to the two warring party leaders of Punjab, former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh and state unit chief Partap Singh Bajwa.

Rahul said the party should have been united during the present crisis facing the state.

Rahul, who started his two-day Punjab tour by meeting families of the two youths who were killed in police firing last month while protesting against the desecration of a holy book, found fault with the state Congress.

One stage

Rahul’s visit brought the warring leaders together on one stage on Thursday. The visit galvanized the “party-in-splits” ahead of the announcement of the next Punjab Congress president.

After offering condolences at one of the victim’s, Gurjit Singh, house in Faridkot, Rahul walked 7 km along with party leaders to reach the house of the second Sikh youth Krishan Singh who, too, was killed in police firing. Rahul also spent some time in a dharamshala in Guru Shar and interacted with the locals over a cup of tea.

Addressing a gathering, Rahul said he has been assured by his party leaders that they will act unitedly in the interest of Punjab.
