A 24-year-old IT professional was so grief-stricken by his mother’s death on Thursday night that he jumped from the 14th floor of an apartment complex less than five hours later.

Relatives and friends were mourning his mother’s death beside her body in his flat when they learnt of his suicide.

Vineeth Poornachandra, who was working as a software development engineer at Amazon, just could not come to terms with the passing away of his mother, Meera. She was suffering from cancer and had died around 10 pm.

Poornachandra informed his relatives and friends. As mourners streamed into his flat in the Army Welfare Association apartment in Thippasandra and relatives began making arrangements for funeral, he went to an apartment complex where his friends stay. But he didn’t go to their flat; he went to the 14th floor instead and jumped down. This was around 2.15 am.

The security guard, who was familiar with Poornachandra as he used to often visit his friends, rushed only to find him lying in a pool of blood. He then called the deceased’s relatives as well as the police, a senior officer said.

Relatives said Poornachandra was extremely distraught at his mother’s death. His father had died a few years ago. He talked about ending his life as he felt lonely, the officer added. A case has been registered at the Kadugodi police station.
