Med seat scam: High Court orders notice to college

Petitioner seeks CBI probe into seat allotment

The High Court on Friday ordered issue of emergent notice to Dr BR Ambedkar Medical College and Ananda Social and Education Trust in a petition seeking CBI inquiry into medical seats scam.

The petitioner, Shivalingaswamy, a dismissed employee of the college, had contended that during the year 2011-12, a total of 40 students were allotted medical seats at the college and 26 of them were made to withdraw from medical course by offering them money.

The seats so vacated were allotted to students from affluent families under management quota by collecting a huge sum as capitation fee. According to the petitioner the college management had collected more than Rs 51 crore by this route. He had sought the court to order a CBI probe into the matter. Justice Anand Byrareddy ordered emergent notice and adjourned the matter.

Public access to Park

The High Court on Friday sought to know from the Ministry of Defence the reason for barring public access to the Field Marshal Cariappa Park located between MG Road and Cubbon Road.

B R Sharan Kumar had filed a public interest litigation seeking directions from the court for opening the 22-acre park for the public. He had contended that the park is a public amenity and general public should be allowed inside the park. The State government has contributed Rs 50 lakh for the development of this park.

The counsel representing the Defence ministry said that they were yet to get instructions about the Park. A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice S K Mukherjee and Justice B V Nagarathna directed the ministry to file its objections and adjourned the matter to November 20.

EMPRI report

The State government has informed the the High Court that it had been going through the report and recommendations of the Environmental Management and Policy Research Institute (EMPRI) on the protection of Thippagondanahalli reservoir (TG Halli) and its catchment area.

A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice S K Mukherjee and Justice B V Nagarathna adjourned the hearing to December 11.
