Girinagar stinks as trash remains unattended

Last Updated 07 November 2015, 20:14 IST

With no place to dispose the tonnes of waste generated in the City, uncleared garbage is piling up in several parts of the City. The situation in Girinagar ward is no different.

Mounds of garbage lying unattended opposite to Vivekananda Park. The garbage lying opposite to the Vivekananda Park lies uncleared and is quickly piling up. As the city gears up for the Diwali festivities and with most of the Bengalureans are eager to burst the crackers, the situation will only worsen further in the days to come.

The promise made by Mayor B N Manjunath Reddy to rid the City of trash remains a distant possibility. The trash is slowly gobbling up the road space. Bikers face hardships in negotiating garbage strewn on the road. The morning walkers and joggers, who visit the park, daily complain that they have to endure the horrible stench that emanates from the huge pile of refuse.

Garbage, ranging from broken branches of trees to plastics and to the leftover food, is lying unattended for days due to the protests by the villagers close to the landfills.

The thermocol boards pose grave threat than the polythene bags. The boards easily break into tiny pieces. When animals such as dogs and cattle browse through the trash for food, the particles, could enter the nostrils, thereby suffocating them.

Add to it, leachate, oozing from the trash, is seeping into the soil, thereby polluting the groundwater.

While the door-to-door collection of waste is satisfactory, it is being unloaded in their own backyard. “We collect the garbage from every household and the waste dumped at a collection point. The tippers are supposed to lift the waste from the collection point and send it to the landfills, which is not happening. Hence, this pile up of waste,” says a pourakarmika.
