'40-acre land identified for open jail near Konaje'

Proposal to be included in next budget: Parameshwara

Home Minister G Parameshwara has said that 40 acres of land had been identified near Konaje for constructing an open jail. The proposal will be submitted to the chief minister, who also holds the finance portfolio, to be included it in the next budget.

Addressing media persons on Sunday, after visiting the Mangaluru jail which witnessed twin murders on November 2, he said that the construction of a new jail was inevitable in Dakshina Kannada district. The present jail lacks facilities and space. The minister said to enhance security in the jail, 25 Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF) personnel would be deployed within a few days. 

He said that mobile jammers will be installed inside the Mangaluru jail. Apart from this, CCTV cameras will be installed in the old jail building in Mangaluru. “I have issued directions to repair the electricity connections inside the jail,” he said. “The investigation into the murder of undertrials Madoor Isubu and Ganesh Shetty is in progress. All the details cannot be revealed at this juncture. The investigation into the dereliction of duty by the jail staff is in progress. Based on the interim report submitted by Mysuru jail Chief Superintendent P V Anand Reddy, five jail staff have been suspended. Stringent action will be taken against the culprits after the investigation is complete,” he added.

To a query on rise in crime rate in the coastal district, the minister appealed to the people to maintain peace in the district. “In the name of moral policing, people should not resort to violence and take law into their hands.”

On the threat calls to ministers, he said that the ministers need not worry. The police department is committed to safeguard the public and the ministers, he added.

Parameshwara who is also the KPCC chief said that the Congress was set to face the Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections in the State.

District In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai, District Congress president Kodijal Ibrahim, MLAs J R Lobo and Mohiuddin Bava were present.
