Minor girl rescued from child marriage

The Hanumanthanagar police, along with members of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), on Sunday, rescued a minor girl who was being married off in a local temple.

Based on a tip-off, the police went to the temple after alerting the CWC and Bosco Mane, an NGO. They interrogated the parents of the girl and found that the bride was 17 years old and a resident of Hanumanthanagar. Her parents were getting her married off to one of their relatives who is 23 years old and resides in Rajajinagar.

They stopped the wedding, rescued the minor girl and gave her custody to the CWC. The girl and her parents will be counselled by CWC members. The parents were aware that it was illegal to get their daughter married off when she was still a minor. The wedding was to be held in a temple, the police said.
