Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Dinesh Gundu Rao said on Sunday that there was a need to have more co-operative societies that were reliable. He said that the functioning of these societies must be such that people retain trust in them.

He was speaking after unveiling a portrait of S Ananth, former president of Somavamsha Sahasrarjuna Kshatriya Co-operative Society Limited in the City.

Lauding the Society for its achievements, Rao said that its annual turnover of Rs 205 crore was commendable. “There are many such societies that are formed, but die eventually with the members making use of them for personal gains. However, there are others which manage to win the people’s trust and stay forever,” he said.

Distributing scholarships to students of the community who had scored high marks, the minister said, “The youth are our strength. If they are not trained well, they are bound to become a liability.” Over 40 students from the community who had scored high marks in SSLC and PUC were felicitated and a few were awarded scholarships.  Former minister P G R Sindhia urged students to use education as a tool to prosper.

“Out of the total number of people who join school, 60 per cent drop out at PUC level, while the rest drop out at SSLC level. Only a handful of them pursue post graduation,” he said.

President of Somavamsha Sahasrarjuna Kshatriya Co-operative Society Limited D Gangadharsa and Kengeri ward corporator V V Sathyanarayana were present on the occasion.
