Walkathon for diabetes awareness

The Malles- waram Diabetes and Nephro Prevention Trust will organise a walkathon on November 15, on the eve of World Diabetes Day, to create awareness about diabetes and complications related to the disease.

This is the ninth edition of the walkathon and it will be supported by Hospitals including Manipal, Apollo, Jupitor Hospital, Dr Solanki Eye Hospital and other diagnostic centres from the City.

The walk is to begin at Malleswaram Grounds opposite Malleswaram Police Station and will go around the locality. It will be followed by a free blood sugar check for participants. A medical exhibition has been organised between 9 am and 12 noon at the Malleswaram Grounds where exhibits on signs and symptoms of the disease, its complications and treatment will be displayed and explained.

Dr Dinesh Kamath, a physician in Manipal Hospitals, Malleswaram, said that the International Diabetes Federation has highlighted the importance of making lifestyle changes.  It is important to exercise regularly, eat healthy and maintain normal body weight to avoid co-existing diseases such as obesity, high cholesterol and blood pressure.

“Last year, we had over 5,000 participants in the event. This year, we are expecting around 7,000 participants,” Dr Kamath said.

The walkathon is to be inaugurated by Food and Civil supplies Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Malleswaram MLA Dr C N Ashwathnarayan and Rajajinagar MLA Suresh Kumar will also be participating in the event,” he added.
