People can be fooled only once: Sena to BJP

A day after the Grand Alliance led by Nitish-Lalu combine dashed BJP’s power dreams in Bihar, the Shiv Sena — much on expected lines — hit out at the BJP saying the results could change the course of national politics.

“You can win one election with money and government power, you can fool people once... We do not know if crackers have been burst in Pakistan after the victory, but in Bihar, crackers are certainly being burst,” the Shiv Sena said in an editorial in Saamana, the party mouthpiece in Marathi, and Dophar ka Saamana, its Hindi tabloid version.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party, which is part of the BJP-led NDA coalition led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra-Fadnavis-led Mahayuti government in Maharashtra, had on Sunday, too, taken potshots at the BJP for Bihar results.

"The Bihar outcome would impact national politics and also create an upheaval within the BJP... Those who had taken the Delhi Assembly election lightly will have to take Bihar results seriously because this was a direct fight between Nitish Kumar and Narendra Modi. Even after using political might, money and various announcements, the BJP could not even win 60 seats while its allies have been buried 20 feet underground,” the hard-hitting editorial said on Monday.

“Modi’s trusted man and architect of the BJP’s Lok Sabha victory, Amit Shah, had to bite the dust in Bihar elections. All this was possible because Nitish Kumar did not make tall or false claims,” the editorial said in a an apparent comparison of Nitish and Modi’s rallies and promises. “Lalu Prasad, accused by the BJP of jungle raj and corruption, bagged the largest number of seats,” it said.
