Torn pages of Ramayana, Gita found in Punjab

Last Updated 09 November 2015, 20:18 IST

After repeated incidents of sacrilege of the revered Guru Granth Sahib in Punjab, torn pages of Hindu mythological scriptures the Bhagvad Gita and Ramayana were found scattered on the streets of Ludhiana on Monday morning.

An uneasy calm prevailed in the areas following the incident. The border state is still to come to terms with incidents of sacrilege of the Sikh holy book, and now the desecration of Hindu mythological scriptures threatens to escalate tension in a potentially volatile atmosphere that Punjab is reeling under. Fortunately, there have been no provocative reactions from the public following the incident.

Two persons suspected to be involved in the incident have been rounded up by the police for questioning. Heavy police force has been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident.

The police are tracking leads from a CCTV camera footage which shows a few youths, suspected to be ragpickers, in the wee hours of Monday. Residents of the area were quick to prompt the local police when they noticed torn pieces of the holy book scattered all over on the streets in Deep Nagar and Chander Nagar localities. Top police officials reached the spot and took stock of the situation. An FIR has been registered. Activists of some religious organisations also reached the place where the desecration took place.
