That is until you notice he extends his right hand, palm open, seeking alms from passersby and motorists in some of the affluent parts of this city.
Fifty-two-year-old Shankar, alias Mehto, begs to live a lavish life. When he gets time off from his job, Shankar enjoys life holidaying at resorts and hotels and even possesses the latest electronic gadgets.

The high-profile beggar was caught by the Chandigarh police on Thursday evening from a guest house where he was living for the past two months, paying a monthly rent of Rs 6,000. The cops also recovered Rs 2,500, a mobile phone and an ATM card from his possession. A case under the Beggary Act was registered against him.

“He was not afraid of the police and said that nobody could stop him from begging. He is a very clever man and had not even divulged his identity before the guesthouse officials,” said Janak Rana who is investigating the case.

Hailing from Raipur in Chhattisgarh, Shankar has been begging on the streets since childhood and has travelled several cities across the country.

His next begging target was the summer hill resort town of Shimla where he was planning to fill his begging bowl with generosity from visiting tourists next summer, police said. An unfazed Shankar said after getting caught: “I will continue to beg till I am alive.”
His luxurious lifestyle had first come to the notice of the police when he was caught in 2007. Police had then recovered a coloured television, a VCD and other valuables from his room. He had admitted to having once dined and lived in a five-star hotel.
