Showers, festival trash compound garbage woes

One-and-half times more waste generated
Last Updated 11 November 2015, 20:53 IST

Even as the City is still grappling with piles of garbage generated during Dasara and before, the first two days of Deepavali has further worsened the situation.

Thousands of tonnes of waste lying unattended across the City and the rain has only compounded the problem. In the absence of places to dump the waste, the usual practice adopted by the garbage contractors to set the waste on fire is not working due to the damp weather for the last four-five days. As a result, the muck has spilled all over the main roads.

The problem will further aggravate once the Diwali festivities are over as the City normally generates at least one and half times more waste than on any regular day. Mounds of garbage causing grave hardship to the motorists and passersby on Uttarahalli Main Road, opposite to a prominent food joint.

On the same road towards Padmanabhanagar, there is another garbage heap lying uncleared. At Kathriguppe Main Road, near Vidyapeetha Circle, Hanumanthanagar, Kadirenahalli, Banashankari, Sarakki Main Road, Girinagar, Chikpet.

The situation is no different in North-west Bengaluru. Piles of waste greet people in Sheshadripuram, Malleswaram, Kurubarahalli, Yeshwantpura, Mahalakshmipuram among others.

Similar is the story of Central Bengaluru. Heaps of unattended garbage on the road have become eyesore for the passersby in Shivajinagar, Ulsoor, Frazer Town and in other parts of the region.

The rains in the past two days have hampered the Palike’s drive to rid the City of garbage.

There is some relief for the residents of Ulsoor. After a long wait, the Palike cleared the huge pile of garbage that was dumped on the Ulsoor Main Road. The garbage was cleared using large excavator and tippers.
