SDPI workers stage flash protest

Last Updated 12 November 2015, 18:07 IST
Tension prevailed at the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute’s  (MMC and RI) mortuary premises for sometime on Thursday after Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) workers staged a flash protest urging the officials to take the mortal remains of Shahul Hameed (Sahil Ahmed), 26, to a mosque to offer prayers.

They staged the protest before his last rites were performed at his native place in Kodagu district. Hameed had succumbed to bullet injuries suffered during a protest that turned into a clash over Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary in Madikeri on Tuesday.

The relatives of Hameed were taking the body of Hameed in an ambulance after the postmortem, when SDPI workers, led by their State unit president Abdul Majeed, stopped the vehicle on the premises of the mortuary. Though the ambulance was escorted and piloted by policemen in different vehicles, it did not deter the SDPI workers, who wanted to take the body for prayers at a mosque on Akbar Road. Some of the workers also demanded the arrest of right wing leaders, accusing their role behind the death of Hameed.

DCP (Law and Order)
Dr H T Shekhar, who was supervising the security arrangements, tried to pacify the agitators, but in vain. Only after some relatives of Shahul, who were accompanying the body, offered to broker truce, did the agitators budge, thus allowing the ambulance to move further. The body was taken later to his native place in Kodagu district for funeral.

Autopsy performed
The autopsy lasted one hour and 45 minutes, starting from 11 am, before the body was handed over to the relatives.

Hameed, who had been admitted to Apollo BGS Hospitals on Tuesday, had been declared brain dead the same day. However, he was declared dead at 7.30 pm on Wednesday, after all efforts to save him proved futile.

The autopsy procedure was conducted by Dr Ravi and Dr Dayanand and recorded in the presence of Tahsildar Naveen Joseph, accompanied by Deputy Commissioner of Police Shekhar and other police officials.

Minister’s visit
A day after he was appointed as in-charge minister of Kodagu district, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Dinesh Gundurao visited the mortuary to pay his last respects to Hameed.

Speaking to media persons, he said, “It is unfortunate that two people lost their lives during the clash in Madikeri. All efforts are being made to restore peace and the government will not tolerate any attempts to disturb peace in the region”.

The minister also appealed to the people to ignore rumours aimed at disturbing peace.

Report to CM
Reacting to media queries, the minister said a report will be submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah within two days.

“All information regarding the incident is being collected, besides vetting into the lapses, if any, on the part of the district administration and police. Besides, the government has ordered for an inquiry from the regional commissioner. There is no decision yet on judicial probe,” he clarified. SDPI president Abdul Majeed submitted a memorandum to the minister demanding justice to the family of Hameed.
