B'luru PU student shortlisted for IGNITE award

Last Updated 12 November 2015, 19:22 IST
A concept to build a colour-coded thermometer by a PU student from the City, to be mainly used by people living in rural areas and those with less accessibility to hospitals, has been shortlisted for the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam IGNITE 2015 Award.

“Its working is extremely simple and efficient. The change in the colour of LEDs through green, orange and red with various combinations tells the seriousness of the situation. In case of limitations of the user like poor colour identification or complete blindness, it works through a series of sounds and vibrations to convey its message,” said Janmejay Singh Rathore, a student of CMR National PU College.

The thermometer will be equipped with a screen which tells the precautionary measures to be taken for that specific temperature, a GPS for locating the nearest doctor or hospital to the user and an emergency button to directly call an ambulance. It supports bluetooth which gives a direct connection to smartphones, where one can change the settings for the thermometer. The instrument can be modified for use in livestock or other animals, said Rathore.

Another student Adi Kumar from Deen’s Academy has also been shortlisted for the award for his idea of a unique handrest for a fractured hand.

The awards are given out by the National Innovation Foundation-India, an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology.

The award ceremony will be held on November 30 in Ahmedabad. As many as 31 ideas from 40 students across the country will be awarded.
